HISTORY

The D.E.M.A. Trader w a s a 333-ton general cargo ship built in 1957 that was last known as the Belizean-flagged G.G.D.Trader. The approximately 165‐foot long freighter was seized by the U S . Customs Service for smuggling narcotics. In conjunction with the 2003 Dive Equipment and Marketing Association (D.E.M.A.) annual convention that was held in Miami, the G.D.D. Trader w a s renamed the D.E.M.A. Trader and sunk as an artificial reef on October 28, 2003, off Key Biscayne. The wreck of the D.E.M.A. Trader rests upright and intact in approximately 80feet of water just to the north of the tug Rio Miami and to the west of the Sarah Jane artificial reef site. Large openings were cut in the sides of the superstructure to allow safe penetration into the former galley and cabin areas. Tons of concrete culvert pipes and junction boxes were also loaded into the ship’s cargo hold to produce additional complex habitat for marine life.
