HISTORY

The 298-ton general cargo vessel Princess Britney was launched on July 10, 1956, as the Heinz Helmutby Nobiskrug Werft of Rendsburg, Germany. Originally owned by Captain Behrens, the 165-foot long German freighter would change hands several times over the next five decades: in 1965, after being sold to Martin von Ronn, she sailed as the Elbstrand (also Elbestrand); renamed Claudia in 1973 after being purchased by Giromar Shipping Company, Limited of Cyprus; she traveled to Denmark later that same year after being bought by Eva Sorensen and then sailed as Ellen Peter; she was renamed Lorelei by Harry Jacobsen when he acquired the freighter in 1975; after a long run, the coaster was bought by Leyenda Shipping, Incorporated of Belize in 1998 and renamed Leyenda; and finally, in 2001, the vessel was named Princess Britney after her sale to Salvador Shipping and Trading. However, the Princess Britney sailed for but a year before being seized by the U S . Customs Service after agents discovered more than 156 pounds of cocaine hidden a beloved figure to his country by refusing the throne to Bulgaria in 1885. The steel-hulled bark, official number 213604, was 226.1 feet in length,  37.3 feet in breadth, and displaced 1,361tons. After several routine years at sea,the underneath the deck in the freighter’s engine room during ”Operation Riverwalk.” The forfeited vessel was subsequently cleaned and sunk in 80 feet of water off Key Biscayne on April 29, 2003. Divers will find the Princess Britney upright and intact, and in close proximity to several other artificial reefs, such as the South Seas, which rests approximately 250 feet to the southwest.
