HISTORY

The Sea Emperor was a 171-foot long, 43-foot wide barge sunk as an artificial reef on October 3, 1991, as mitigation for reef damage caused by the Great Lakes Dock and Dredge Company in 1988. The barge was loaded with approximately 1,500 tons of concrete culverts and deployed in 70 feet of water off Boca Inlet. During the sinking, the barge flipped, spilling the concrete culverts off into the sand. The barge turtled and came to rest next to the pile, producing a more interesting reef site to explore. Divers can follow a line of rubble from the Sea Emperor to the wreck of the freighter United Caribbean, which was scuttled nearby.
