The 120‐foot long freighter Biscayne was stripped and intentionally sunk in 60feet of water asan artificial reef in December 1974 near Key Biscayne. Just to the east of the Biscayne is the wreck of the 100-foot long freighter Miracle Express. The Miracle Express was sunk several hundred yards offshore of the Biscayne, but Hurricane Andrew moved her into the side of the Biscayne, ripping the Biscayne’s stern section loose, and significantly impacting the structural integrity of the Miracle Express. Due to her shallow depth and the fact that she has been underwater for 30 years, the Biscayne has been completely covered by corals, sponges, and other invertebrate growth.
