HISTORY

Launched: July12, 1956. Makkum, Netherlands shipyard of C. Amels and Zoon.
March 11, 1974: sold to Greek owners, Palships Limited and renamed Paleoupolis
1981: sold to Cox Shipping Line, Limited in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
In addition to hauling cargo, the vessel appeared in four episodes of the television show “Miami Vice”. Broward County and the Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo eventually purchased and prepared the freighter for sinking as an artificial reef.

Divesite:

The Caicos Express settled on the bottom in approximately 240 feet of water two minutes after scuttling charges were detonated. With a stern wheelhouse and engine room, as well as large forward cargo holds, the wreck of the Caicos Express is basically a clone of numerous other freighters sunk as artificial reefs off South Florida. Several large spools of thick cable scattered about the deck of the holds appear to be the only cargo. The following year, Broward County also sunk 160 pari‐mutuel betting machines approximately 200 feet away from the wreck.
