HISTORY

The Deep Freeze w a s originally launched at the Neuenfelde, Germany shipyard of shipbuilder J.J.  Sietas Schifiswerft on December 15, 1958, as the Marie Horn. Commonly known as a ”reefer,” the Marie Hornwas 231.6 feet long, 33.5 feet wide, and displaced 1,138 tons gross. In 1969, she was sold to Trans Caribbean Lines of Miami, registered in Liberia, and renamed the Deep Freeze. On January 9, 1972, the Deep Freeze w a s rocked by an explosion and then swept by an ensuing fire while moored at Puerto Limon, Costa Rica. The gutted freighter was eventually towed to Miami, where she was stripped of her superstructure and later scuttled as an artificial reef onOctober 1, 1976. The wreck of the Deep Freeze rests in 135 feet of water with the top of her hull rising to within 110 feet of the surface. While relatively intact, the freighter’s stern was twisted from the remainder of the hull by Hurricane Andrew in 1992. There are several other wrecks in close proximity to the Deep Freeze, including the St. Henry's Express and the Pimelious. Coincidentally, the Deep Freeze n o w rests approximately 12miles north of the Ultra Freeze, another reefer built by J.J. Sietas at the same shipyard.
