February 27, 2001, drug-sniffing dogs from a boarding team participating in ”Operation Riverwalk" sensed cocaine near propane tanks towards the stern of the 101-foot long Miguana. A closer examination of the tanks revealed they were not properly installed and were unusually heavy.

Further scrutiny found that the tanks contained 125 pounds of cocaine worth $1.1 million.

US. Customs Reef off Miami consists of three vessels – the Brandy Wine, Etoile De Mer, and Miguana‐ scuttled in close proximity to each other, all of which were seized by the U S . Customs Service for attempting to smuggle narcotics into Florida via the Miami River. The Tacoma is also considered part of US. Customs Reef, but was sunk later and rests approximately 500 feet to the northwest of the previously‐mentioned trio.

On July 13, 2001, explosives cuttling charges sent the Miguana, a former garbage scow converted into a cargo freighter, 140 feet to the bottom of the sea.Now rests between the Brandy Wine and the Etoile de Mer, which lies west off the Miguana’s bow. The wreck of the Miguana has easy access into its interior where divers can View the former garbage scow’s engine.
