The Narwal was a coaster built at the Foxhol, Netherlands shipyard of Vooraitgang Scheepswerf. Launched on June 5, 1939, the 291-ton freighter w a s 136 feet in length and 24.9 feet in beam. In June 1967 the Narwal was sold to Swedish owners. Later, she operated for Seahorse Shipping Company, Limited, and was home ported at Kingstown, St. Vincent. The Narwal eventually outlived her usefulness, and was acquired for use asan artificial reef at a cost of $9,500 and scuttled in 115 feet of water off Miami on April 17, 1986. The coaster used to be an excellent dive site until Hurricane Andrew visited South Florida in August 1992. The massive hurricane obliterated the Narwal, breaking her into several large pieces. Over time, the wreck has further collapsed, and now largely consists of flattened hull plates in the sand.
