The tugboat Orion was launched in 1927 as the Trinidad by the Panama Railroad Company at their Balboa shipyard in the Panama Canal Zone. Named after one of the rivers dammed to help create the Panama Canal, the Trinidad registered a length of 126 feet, a beam of 28 feet, and a displacement of 355 tons. After almost four decades guiding ships through the canal, the Trinidad was sold to Orion Towing Company, Incorporated of Bartow in December 1966 and renamed Orion. Eventually abandoned along the Miami River, she was acquired for use asan artificial reef. On December 22, 1981, the Orion was sunk in 95 feet of water off Key Biscayne. In August 1992, Hurricane Andrew impacted the wreck, ripping off the wheelhouse and depositing it off the starboard side of the hull. Even with the damage from the hurricane, the Orion remains a pleasant dive with significant relief. The tug rests in close proximity to some coral hard bottom habitat, and marine life is typically abundant.
