HISTORY

The Sea Mist II (IMO number 6515722), built by the shipyard of AB. Ekensbergs Varo at Stockholm, Sweden in 1965 as the Don Carlos, w a s a 265.4-foot long, 44.3‐foot wide general cargo RO‐RO (”Roll On ‐ Roll Off”) vessel. The 2,353‐ton freighter was sold in 1973 to Nils Hugo Sand of Oslo, Norway and renamed Nopal Sand; in 1977 she was acquired by Empresa Azucarera Montelimar S.A., which was a sugar company controlled by Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza, and renamed Carla; later, the vessel was sold to Trafford Holdings, Limited of the Cayman Islands and operated as the Aracely in 1980; after her sale to Caribbean Tankers, Incorporated of Panama in 1988, she sailed as the Aries Navigator; in 1990, she traded hands to Liquid Cargo, Incorporated of Belize, where upon she was renamed Rosemere; the freighter was named Bayside after her purchase by Bayside Marine, Incorporated in 1992;

and, finally, the American company C.P. Cargo and Shipping bought the well‐used vessel in 1995, and renamed her Sea Mist II. Unfortunately, due to financial issues, the Sea Mist II did not operate long for her new owners. The neglected vessel, rusting along the Miami River, was finally impounded by the US. Coast Guard due to safety and pollution violations. At a cost of $75,000, Schurger Salvage and Diving, Incorporated acquired, cleaned, and ultimately scuttled the freighter off Jupiter on May 25, 2001. The Sea Mist II n o w rests upright and intact in 215 feet of water oriented with her bow facing southward, though portions of the large vessel rise almost 90feet off the bottom.
