• September 1983: Following her sale to Carpentaria S.A., a survey in Guayaquil, Ecuador found the Ultra Freeze to be in dramatically poor condition. The owners ignored the findings though, and had the freighter loaded with a cargo of 200 tons of shrimp and set sail for Miami

• December 16, 1983: En route, the Ultra Freeze was forced to dock at Panama for repairs, which delayed the vessel for several months even though the repairs were apparently never completed. The reefer was finally towed into Miami on with a cargo of badly decomposing shrimp, representing a loss of over $1.5 million worth of product.

Divesite:

The Ultra Freeze, now resting in approximately 120 feet, is a large and impressive wreck. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew ripped the starboard side of the hull open, bent the hull 90 degrees at amidships, and stripped the pilothouse from the hull. There is extensive penetration possible, but divers should have the requisite experience before exploring the interior due to fallen electrical cables and general deterioration. Unfortunately, the Ultra Freeze rests in an area that apparently is subject to chronically turbid visibility.
