HISTORY

The Union Express (IMO number 5315242) was built in 1959 as the coastal freighter Scheldeborg by Scheepswerf Friesland N.V. at Lemmer, Netherlands. The coaster was 159.2 feet long, 26.1 feet wide, and 394 tons burden. In 1969, the vessel was purchased by S. de long of the Netherlands, who renamed her Adine (also appears as Adina); sold to a Panamanian company in 1982, the freighter sailed as El Masare; and in 1988, the coaster began operating as the Union Express for Honduran owners. The vessel did n o t operate long for her new owners, however, as the Union Express was escorted into Miami and impounded in 1990 after the US. Coast Guard found drugs hidden onboard the freighter. The Dutch coaster was eventually acquired for use as an artificial reef and ultimately sunk on April 25, 1992. Officially known as the Mariner Outboards Reef, or simply, the Mariner I, the freighter rests on her side in 110 feet of water. Several months after the Union Express was scuttled, Hurricane Andrew swept across South Florida, breaking the freighter into two sections and flattening her amidships and forward cargo holds. The bow rests on her portside and is dug into the sand bottom, while the larger and more interesting stern lies hard over on her starboard side. The Mariner II Barge can be found approximately 400 feet offshore and slightly north of the Union Express.
